Building confidence before your brand shoot

One of the top worries that I have from my clients when booking a brand shoot, is how they will look or come across on-camera. I get it – I much prefer being behind the camera than in front of it! But it doesn’t need to be as scary as you think… I’m going to give you some tips to help overcome the fear, and hopefully help you to feel more confident if you go ahead and book a brand shoot.

1 – Have a self-care day, the day before your shoot. This can be something as simple as having a pamper session at home, having a movie day, going for a long walk, or even going for a full-on spa day!

2 – Strike a power pose for a few days on the week leading up to your shoot. Think superhero style – legs slightly apart and hands on your hips! This one isn’t for everyone, I’ve tried it a few times and it weirdly seems to help for me if I am feeling nervous!

3 – Practice some poses in front of a mirror. I know this sounds weird, and this isn’t a must as if you book a shoot with me, I will guide you throughout the shoot. But it might help to make you feel less awkward, and will help you to know what you feel looks good.

Here’s some posing ideas to try out:

  • Sit back and relax – by this I don’t mean the slumpy slouch that I love to do after a long day! Sit back on a sofa, in a chair, lean your arm on the sofa arm, or tuck one foot under the other leg.
  • Sit cross legged – this is less formal. Put your hands in your lap, on the sofa arm, or hold a prop like a laptop or notebook.
  • Put your legs to the side when sitting down – rest your hands on your knees.
  • Lean forward – this sounds odd when you think about it, but it’s actually a very flattering pose! Cross your arms on your knees, put one hand under your chin, clasp your hands together, rest your elbows on your knees.
  • Lay down on a sofa and kick your legs in the air.
  • While standing up, cross your legs – point your toes towards the floor. Pop your hands in your pockets, grab one arm with the other one hanging down, put one hand on your hip, clasp your arm with the other hand.
  • Put your weight on your back leg.
  • Strong stance – power pose!
  • Walk (slowly!)
  • Lean against something.
  • While sitting on some steps, hold one knee.

I hope you find this helpful. I’ll try and put together a short video showing a few different poses at some point – it’s quite difficult to explain by text!
